THE CHINESE DILEMMA

                Hindi Chini Bhai Bhai was certainly a blunder game by India in those days of Nehruvian policies. Though it is so sweet to dream of a brotherly relationship between the two big economies and neighbours of Asia, but it is equally more impractical to materialise. This hard fact was realised by both the nations at different times. Chinese learnt it during their invasion of Tibet in 1950 when they realised how important India was on it’s way of establishing supremacy in Asia. India realised it during another invasion by China on itself in 1962.

                Since long China has been playing a prefect plot to engage India in petty issues and raising it’s proxy struggle to contain India. India has been busy in dealing with a neighbouring country run by corrupt Generals who are working at the behest of China and other anti India forces of the world. The failure of the two direct wars brought on India during 1965 and 1971 opened the eyes of it’s enemies that it is a formidable force to face any defeat so easily. So these forces started to promote another proxy war in the form of terrorism. They got their evergreen shepherd in the name of Pakistan to execute their plan. This was made possible due to the corrupt Generals of Pakistan who were always worried about their estates and families settled abroad rather than the future of their country. For them Pakistan has always been a cash cow and a provider of their future fortune. As was the case with the corrupt colonial officials of British Raj in India whose main intention was to loot the country for their personal gains and that they achieved by wooing their masters in England with huge booties. The ignored fact was that they earned huge fortunes for themselves which was very huge as compared to the contribution to their Queen’s treasury. The Pakistani Generals are doing a similar exercise. They have ruined their county’s economy and now are putting the whole country mortgaged with China. If you do a research on the retired Army Generals of Pakistan you will see that most of them are settled abroad.

                China on the other hand is successfully employing the Pakistan’s machinery to destabilise India and retard India’s growth story. When India signed GATT in 1991, China was already training it’s people with Japanese help on skill development. That preparation of China has now made it into the largest manufacturing hub in the world. Inspite of so many media restrictions and censoring of international social media sites, still China remains the most sought destination for the global manufacturers. This is due to the availability of cheap and skilled labour, availability of a robust infrastructure and near zero corruption in administration. Unlike India, China has been following the developmental path in a different way. It has been working as a big corporate house rather than a country. It has totally neglected nearly one third of its population living to its hilly north and western side. The development of roads and infrastructure is happening towards the eastern cities only.

                After acting like a big corporate house for nearly five decades and growing at a tremendous speed of nearly 9 percent per annum, China has accomplished it’s goal of becoming a very powerful economy now. But. as it grows near the mile stone of becoming the largest economy surpassing USA, it faces greater challenge now. Though it was able to manage it’s neighbour India by retarding it’s growth with the help of wily Pakistani Generals and a few institutions and individuals from within India, still India grew at a decent pace. Now when China is so near to step ahead of USA as the superpower, it cannot tolerate a strong and powerful India just beneath it’s nose. Suddenly it’s many equations have gone for a miss. China invested close to 67 Billion US dollar on it’s CPEC project overriding India’s concern of sovereignty only by assuming that India will never be strong enough to counter claim against Chinese interest. It even bought a sizeable part of Sri Lanka (Hambantota) and Coco Island from Myanmar in order to keep India at check. China was going well in it’s global leap when it established it’s overseas port in D’jbouti. As if it was not enough in securing its trade, it started to build artificial islands in South China Sea and claimed almost whole South China Sea with it’s infamous Nine Dash Line map. This is when the world community felt it urgent to respond. The French, British and USA directed its Naval vessels to pass through the Chinese claimed waters in SCS in missions like right to navigation. In the quest to contain China, the world comunity sees India as a coherent partner. The Indo USA Japan Malabar naval exercise was proposed to be joined by Australia which India promptly refused. But the idea of Quad propped up with this. The military alliance long proposed by only academicians now seems nearly materialised. The emergence of India under a strong leader like Narendra Modi and a fragile Pakistani economy adds to China’s worry. Trump administration has been pressurising China to check it’s dubious nature in world politics. A denuclearised and talking North Korea is a big blow to China’s control over the region. The failed second Summit in Hanoi, between Trump and Kim Jong Un must have been a breather to China. But both sides ie USA and North Korea have reiterated that the talks will continue. This is again worrisome to China. In order to keep the world communities’ eyes off it’s detention camps of Uighur Muslims, China has been consistently siding with Pakistan in blocking UN Security council resolution banning Terrorist Azhar Masood. Only time will tell how long it is able to fend it’s own anti Muslim propaganda in Xinjiang province from the world community, especially from the Organisation of Islamic Republics. China has been able to get a stake in Russian Trans Siberian Railway network to transport it’s goods to Western Europe and the One Belt One Road initiative has gained some momentum lately with Italy joining the fray. But India’s refusal to participate in the OBOR initiative is not only detrimental to it’s development but also a threat to it’s existence. China never would be comfortable to handle India’s opposition to CPEC and OBOR. India has shown its intent to preserve it’s sovereignty and security through it’s Surgical strikes across LOC, Balakot airstrikes and the Anti Satellite Missile technology demonstration on 27 th March recently. This would immensely pressurise China to remould it’s strategy in Asia now. As the election in India approaches, China will certainly hope for a hung Lok Sabha or a Coalition Government in centre to breathe a sigh of relief.
